I took my in-laws car shopping today. They currently have a father forlorn Acura TSX, and since they’re getting on in years they want a CUV of some sort. I tried really hard to get them to live the CX5, but they weren’t having it. I think they will end up with a brand new Tiguan SE. It seems nice enough. While we were there, I checked out this little guy... It’s a 2016 R-Line (didn’t even know that was a thing) with 20k miles for was seems like a crazy cheap $18k. What are Oppo’s thoughts on these? It rides a bit rough and has a decent amount of road noise, but the driving dynamics are on point for a cute ute. This might be good wife car material.

I didn’t like them, I almost bought one a few years earlier, the interiors were very cheap which was odd for a Golf based VW I thought. Though I think for newer models they improved that.

The gas mileage was nothing to write home about, especially for such a small crossover based on a Golf.

Their resale is generally really weak, just like almost all VWs except GTIs or GLIs, so picking up a used one for a good price was easy.

However, I think the newest longer wheel base models are a lot better, just not sure how comparable that is to a 2016 R-Line. The R-Line package is just cosmetic, some aero trim and bigger wheels/tires, though I really like how they look.

I dont think that’s a crazy good deal, seems consistent for what I’m seeing up here

I much prefer the newest Tiguan, my wife likes them along with the RAV4 and RX. I wish she just wanted a CT200h

By 2016 these were total dinosaurs and not competitive refinement or fuel economy wise, leading to the horrible resale. I think they were actually pretty good (but expensive) when they came out and VW of America gradually cheapened them and took out  features (pretty sure xenons were available at some point?). Then that facelift made it look uglier. It’s just a really half assed product from some dark days at VW.

Every time I drive my wife’s RAV4 (company car) I think “people ACTUALLY walk into a dealer, test drive these things, and then proceed to BUY THEM?! ”

The newest Tiguan is bigly. I like that it has a third row, because if we bought the ‘06 and suddenly found ourselves with an unexpected third baby brewing, we’d have to go car shopping again. But, VW took the clean, smooth, understated styling of the older Tiguan and scrapped it in favor of MOAR ANGERY.

Honestly, the one today was the first one I’ve ever priced. It just seemed like a good deal. It’s kind of nice to know that’s the going rate so I know it’ll be a cheap option in a couple of months.

The R-Line has a fancy racy-looking steering wheel with flappy paddles, too! See- it’s a real performance SUV!  Honest!!!

Yeah I don't love the RAV4 but the current RX is nice. The NX is hot garbage. Maybe she'll go for a CX-5 but doesn't love the look (interesting, as the current RAV4 is not a looker...)

What?  M y VW CC 2.0 R-Line did not come with that fancy steering wheel, though it was a pre-facelift model.

I liked the CX-5 a ton. Way more in person than in photos, too. The interior is quite a nice place to be, and it it was nice and quiet without a ton of road noise. I declined driving it for myself because I’m never going to buy a $30k CUV.

The current RAV4 is so bad that I have a 100% free one in the driveway with all maintenance and insurance paid by someone else. I still loathe it, and only drive it places because I remind myself how massively expensive my Suburban is to operate.

Tiguans are an easy pass. They’re just not worth it, even with the initial depreciation already hitting. For similar money you can have the superior-in-almost- every-way Volvo XC60 (which is admittedly bigger, but not by much), or a Lincoln MKC, which is quite nice. I’d even take a slightly-older Mercedes GLK over a Tiguan for the same money , because at least it’s a nice place to spend time, even if it’s a bit ungainly-looking.

I’m surprised and disappointed they didn’t like the CX-5; admittedly it’s not the biggest or most-powerful, but the interiors are a treat, they hold up well, are pretty reliable, and are good to drive period, not just as a crossover. I may he biased because 3 women in my family have one each, including my wife, and it had my stamp.of approval before they bought them, and independent of my input.

My mother-in-law is notoriously fickle. I very much liked the CX-5!

If you’re willing to give up on the R-Line trim level, you can get a Tiguan with wheels 1 or 2 inches smaller in diameter, which might help with ride quality.

I’m not opposed to that at all. The R-line wheels and trim look nice, but the ride was pretty harsh and this would be my wife’s car/family car.

Don't buy a Tiguan! I bought an 18, had it for a week before it went into the shops for a rattle and never saw it again. VW finally bought it back after 3 months of sitting there.

Not much to make VW look better. They took it in (there’s a TSB) and 2 weeks later said it was fixed. I made it half a mile before I heard it again and drove it back. It sat for weeks at a time between “fixes” and they never got anywhere. Finally VW agreed to buy it back. I now drive a CX-5 and love it.

If you don’t believe me, check out VW Vortex. There’s a lot of people with the same issue (b-pillar rattle). Also, the car has had 6-7 recalls in the past year alone.
